The United States and Russia are on the edge of a global arms race. It’s no longer a Cold War, but it is still a tense showdown of power.

One of the main reasons that Russia has been able to stay ahead is because it doesn’t have conscripted military service personnel. It has a large and stable NCO cadre to preserve, develop and pass on its military knowledge and skills.

Airpower Compared

The US and Russia have very different air force strategies. The US is more focused on distance missions and has very powerful aircraft. The Russians are more focused on ground operations and have less powerful aircraft.

Fighters Compared

The USA has more multirole fighters than Russia. These include the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II (first flight 2006) and the Sukhoi-35 (2008).

The US also has a much bigger budget than Russia, so it can buy more expensive fighters. These jets can cost more than $100 mill.
