Russian Vs Ukraine
The United States stands with Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty, and we will continue to do so until the people of Ukraine can shape their chosen, democratic future in freedom and peace.
Russia’s aggressive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has ripped apart families, forced millions from their communities, destroyed homes, schools and hospitals, and undermined international peace and security.
The war has destroyed the reputation of Russia as a responsible state, destabilized energy markets, and created a global food crisis. It has also weakened President Putin’s international standing and made him increasingly isolated and weak.
Ukrainians have a strong sense of national identity and are proud to be Ukrainian. An August poll showed 85% of respondents self-identified as Ukrainian citizens as opposed to being residents of any region or ethnic minority; only 64% did so six months earlier — before Russia’s invasion.
As Russia’s military and political influence in Ukraine erode, Ukrainian citizens have deepened their support for EU and NATO membership. A poll found that more than half of those surveyed (not including Crimea or the eastern regions contested by Moscow) supported EU membership, while 40 to 50 percent were in favor of joining NATO.
The United States stands with the people of Ukraine, who have shown remarkable strength and resilience throughout this difficult time. We will stand with the country as it continues to fight this illegal war and protect its sovereignty, until President Putin ends this ill-conceived aggression and the people of Ukraine are free to shape their own democratic future in peace.
